Agriculture has been at the heart of Madidhoo for decades.

Located in Shaviyani Atoll, the island has developed around crop cultivation, agricultural infrastructure and the practical requirements of producing fresh food in an island environment.

Over the years, Madidhoo has supported the cultivation of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, together with the infrastructure, workforce, equipment and marine transport required to move produce from the island to markets, resorts and communities across the Maldives.

Today, Madidhoo continues to develop with the same underlying purpose: to strengthen local agricultural production through experience, investment and responsible use of island resources.

A History Built on Farming

The agricultural history behind Madidhoo goes back more than four decades.

Mohamed Waheed began farming during the 1980s, initially working on islands around Shaviyani Atoll. His agricultural activities at Madidhoo were established in the 1990s and expanded significantly over the years. Historical records describe cultivation developing from an initial area of approximately 20,000 square feet into extensive agricultural operations involving numerous crops, employees, equipment and supporting infrastructure.

His experience has included cultivation across several islands in Shaviyani Atoll and specialist agricultural training in the Philippines.

Madidhoo eventually became the centre of this long-term agricultural work and remains closely associated with his commitment to farming in the Maldives.

AGRICULTURAL LEADERSHIP

Mohamed Waheed

For Mohamed Waheed, farming has been a lifelong commitment.

Through decades of practical agricultural work, he has developed extensive experience in crop cultivation, island farming, agricultural logistics and local food supply.

His work at Madidhoo has included the cultivation of numerous varieties of fruits and vegetables, development of agricultural infrastructure, management of farming teams, and the establishment of supply arrangements serving markets and the tourism industry.

Historical records describe Madidhoo supplying substantial quantities of locally grown produce and, at one stage, supplying fruits and vegetables to 22 resorts, supported by dedicated marine transport.

His approach has remained firmly practical: working directly with agriculture, adapting to island conditions and continuously developing the capacity to produce locally.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Recognised for a Lifetime in Agriculture

Mohamed Waheed’s contribution to Maldivian agriculture has received recognition at the national level.

Among these honours is the National Award of Honour in the field of agriculture, presented by the President of the Maldives, recognising his longstanding contribution to the development of agriculture in the country.

His work has also received formal recognition from the Ministry responsible for agriculture, including recognition in 2014 for the standard of agricultural work carried out on a long-term agricultural island.

This recognition reflects not only years spent farming, but a sustained contribution to increasing local agricultural production and demonstrating the potential of commercial farming in the Maldives.

Sharing Experience with Future Generations

Madidhoo has also provided opportunities for others to experience agriculture first-hand.

Over the years, students and visitors interested in agriculture have been welcomed to the island to observe cultivation activities, understand practical farming methods and learn about the realities of agricultural production in the Maldives.

Mohamed Waheed has actively shared his agricultural knowledge and experience with others, including providing opportunities for students studying agriculture to visit Madidhoo for practical learning.

These visits allow younger generations to experience agriculture beyond the classroom and see how food production works in a real island farming environment.

The island continues to develop its agricultural capacity through improved cultivation, infrastructure, efficient resource use and stronger connections between production and market.
