Growing Under Island Conditions

A wide variety of fruits and vegetables have been cultivated at Madidhoo over the years.

Production has included crops such as watermelon, cucumber, chilli, tomato, capsicum, cabbage, beans, papaya, passion fruit and other locally grown produce. The range of cultivation reflects decades of experience working with different crops under Maldivian island conditions.

What is grown at any given time varies according to season, growing conditions and production plans.

Built for Production

Agriculture at Madidhoo has developed over many years from relatively small areas of cultivation into a much broader agricultural operation.

As farming expanded, so did the systems supporting it — including agricultural infrastructure, equipment, people, storage and transport.

This development created the ability not simply to grow produce, but to operate agriculture with commercial production and supply in mind. The long history of cultivation and agricultural development at Madidhoo is documented in material covering the expansion of farming on the island since the 1990s.

Agriculture is highly practical. Conditions change, crops respond differently, and successful production depends on understanding what works in the environment in which food is being grown.

The agricultural work at Madidhoo is supported by decades of hands-on experience in Maldivian farming.

That experience includes crop production, agricultural development, market supply and finding practical solutions to the logistical challenges of operating from an island.

Much of this agricultural experience is closely connected with Mohamed Waheed, whose career in farming began in the 1980s and whose contribution to Maldivian agriculture has received national recognition.

Agriculture Doesn’t End at Harvest

Growing fresh produce is only one part of the agricultural supply chain.

Produce must also be harvested, handled and transported efficiently so that it can reach customers in good condition.

Marine transport has played an important role in connecting agricultural production at Madidhoo with markets and customers across the Maldives. Over the years, produce from the island has been supplied to commercial customers including the hospitality sector.

That connection between production and supply remains an important part of the way agriculture at Madidhoo is approached.

Growing for the Future

Stronger Local Food Production

The potential of agriculture in the Maldives extends beyond individual farms and individual harvests.

Producing more food locally can strengthen domestic supply, create opportunities within agriculture and reduce dependence on imported produce.

At Madidhoo, the direction is to continue developing productive agriculture while improving the systems that support cultivation, responsible resource use and connections to market.

That broader ambition — strengthening local food production and building greater agricultural capacity in the Maldives — has also been a central part of Mohamed Waheed’s public vision for the sector.
