Four Decades of Farming. A Vision for the Future

For more than four decades, Mohamed Waheed has worked to expand what is possible in Maldivian agriculture.

From hands-on cultivation to commercial production, market supply and the development of Madidhoo, his career has been built around a simple conviction: the Maldives can grow more of its own food.

In 2020, his contribution to agriculture was recognised with the National Award of Honour in the field of agriculture.

Built on Experience

A Journey That Began in 1984

Mohamed Waheed began working in agriculture in 1984, building his knowledge through practical farming across Shaviyani Atoll.

Over the years, he became widely known across the Maldives as “Madidhoo Waheed,” reflecting the close association between his agricultural career and Madidhoo.

From those early years, agriculture became more than an occupation. It became a long-term commitment to developing productive farming under Maldivian island conditions.

That experience eventually led him back to Madidhoo and to an opportunity that would define much of his agricultural career.

Building Madidhoo
From Cultivation to Commercial Agriculture

Madidhoo became the centre of Mohamed Waheed’s agricultural work.

What began with approximately 20,000 square feet of cultivation grew over the years into a much larger agricultural operation. Cultivation expanded across significant areas of the island, supported by a growing workforce, agricultural infrastructure and the systems required to produce at commercial scale.

A wide variety of fruits and vegetables were grown, demonstrating that substantial agricultural production could be developed within the unique conditions of the Maldives.

But growing crops was only part of the challenge.

For agriculture to succeed commercially, produce also had to reach customers.

From Farm to Market

Building the Connection Between Production and Demand

As agricultural production expanded, Mohamed Waheed developed the supply and distribution systems needed to connect Madidhoo with the wider market.

During a significant period of the operation, produce from Madidhoo was supplied to 22 resorts, alongside supply to customers in Malé.

From 2002 to 2015, produce was also sold through Madidhoo Mart in Malé, creating a direct connection between agricultural production on the island and the capital’s market. Dedicated vessels supported the transportation of produce from Madidhoo.

This combination of production, transport and market access became one of the defining features of the Madidhoo operation.

Growing food is only valuable when it can reach the people who need it.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION

A Contribution Recognised at the National Level

In 2020, Mohamed Waheed received the National Award of Honour in the field of agriculture, recognising decades of work and his contribution to the development of agriculture in the Maldives.

The recognition reflects a career built not around a single harvest or project, but around sustained agricultural work over many years—developing production, creating access to markets and contributing to greater local food availability.

More Than Farming

A Vision for Maldivian Agriculture

Mohamed Waheed’s ambitions for agriculture extend beyond Madidhoo.

He believes the Maldives has the ability to produce significantly more of the food it consumes and that stronger domestic agriculture can play an important role in improving food security and reducing dependence on imports.

In a 2021 interview with PSM News, he spoke about the need for better support for farmers, stronger routes to market and greater investment in agricultural production. He also expressed confidence that, with the right conditions, Maldivian agriculture has the potential to grow beyond domestic supply and eventually reach export markets.

Greater Potential

Think beyond today.

Building an agricultural sector capable of serving larger markets in the future.

Stronger Farmers

Create opportunity.

Giving producers better conditions to cultivate, expand and reach reliable markets.

Food Security

Grow more locally.

Strengthening domestic agricultural production and reducing dependence on imported food.

SHARING KNOWLEDGE

Experience Is Most Valuable When It Is Shared

For Mohamed Waheed, the future of agriculture depends on more than land, machinery and investment. It also depends on people.

He has long supported opportunities for students and others interested in agriculture to experience farming first-hand at Madidhoo, observe practical agricultural work and learn from real production environments.

He has also spoken publicly about the importance of introducing agricultural knowledge to younger generations and encouraging more young Maldivians to recognise the opportunities within the sector.

At Madidhoo, this belief has translated into something practical: opening the agricultural environment to learning and passing decades of experience forward.

A Legacy Still in the Making

Experience Behind Madidhoo

Mohamed Waheed’s story is inseparable from the agricultural development of Madidhoo.

From the beginning of his farming career in 1984, through the expansion of commercial agriculture, resort and market supply, and national recognition, his work reflects decades of persistence and belief in the potential of Maldivian agriculture.

But the story is not only about what has already been achieved.

The experience accumulated over more than four decades continues to shape the direction of Madidhoo today—strengthening production, developing market connections and pursuing a more resilient future for locally grown food.
