National Farmers’ Day in Madidhoo

On National Farmers’ Day, we recognise the people whose work has shaped and continues to sustain agriculture in Madidhoo.

Farming on the island is built on daily work – preparing land, planting, maintaining crops, managing irrigation, harvesting and preparing produce for transport. Much of this work takes place away from public attention, but it remains at the heart of agricultural activity in Madidhoo.

Agriculture here has developed over decades, through changing crops, methods and conditions. Across those years, the knowledge and practical experience of the people involved in farming have remained essential.

National Farmers’ Day is also an opportunity to recognise the generations of farmers who have contributed to that history, while acknowledging those who continue the work today.

Farming in an island environment brings its own challenges. Weather, water, soil conditions, pests and the movement of supplies and produce by sea all influence the work carried out each day. Responding to those conditions requires experience, consistency and an understanding of the land.

Today, we recognise that work – in Madidhoo and throughout the Maldives – and the contribution farmers continue to make to local food production.

On National Farmers’ Day, we thank all farmers for the work they do.
